iphone fans need to calm down

After reading this newsweek article titled The iPhone ‘Secret’ I couldn’t help laugh at how addicted people are to whatever scraps Steve Jobs throws at them. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited for Android to be released and maybe even curious to see what the new iphone will look like too. But, you wont find me tracking down Mac cargo ships and reviewing Steve’s airfare costs anytime soon. Come on, isn’t that a bit ridiculous? Is learning a few bits of information a day or two ahead of its release really going to make a huge difference? No, probably not. It might be a great product, but it doesnt need to be stalked like a celebrity… its just a phone folks.
Does anyone really think that Apple can sell 10 million iphones by the end of this year? Are you going to buy one? As a developer, the reasons I wont buy one are that you can only develop apps for it on a Mac and that you must distribute it through the apple store. Those are some pretty heavy restrictions.
Come on Android, save us already!

It’s funny, I was thinking about this while standing outside, watching you write this post through your window. Trying to get an early peek at things is more hassle than it’s worth most times. To me, the whole iPhone thing just seems like style over substance. I mean, they have done a great job marketing the thing and building up their whole iLife brand but it’s just not that big of a deal to me. No one would care nearly as much if it was the exact same product but branded an LG or Samsung.
As far as sales go, I seriously doubt they will sell 10 million this year. I think most of the people that wanted one have one and that it’s going to slow down a bit. I think they will get some boost with the new phones, but how many of those will be 1st gen users replacing their original iPhones?
Mostly I just dislike Apple’s closed environment. They are defining movements (like the pinch) for multi touch sensors and then patenting them so no one else can use them. Imagine if someone had patented the double click on a mouse. The last thing I want is to have 10 different devices, each with their won way of interacting with the the touch sensors. It’s funny to me to see how accepting people will be of such tight control over a product if it is trendy and “cool” enough. I have to hand it to them though, Apple has done one helluva job with their marketing and coming back from some rather dire financial straits over the last 10 years.
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
